Developing Your Local Anesthesia
Skills and Confdence
Kathy Bassett, BSDH, RDH, MEd
Presented as a companion to the lecture
Achieving Local Anesthesia Success, this
hands-on practicum will guide participants
through visualizing key anatomical principles,
animating new techniques and ergonomic
principles, experiencing the proper handling of
select products, and discuss individual barriers
to confdence and success in achieving
adequate local anesthesia. Learning stations,
with the use of simulators, will address
relevant anatomy, and alternatives to common
injection to include “short needle IA”, “high
IA block”, Gow Gates block, and AMSA block,
alternative anesthesia delivery methods
such as nasal delivery, and the proper use of
eutectic topical anesthetic preparations and
their application.
Learning objectives:
5. Implement basic delivery and injection
techniques with confdence
6. Utilize relevant anatomy to increase
reliability of clinical anesthesia
outcomes
7. Adopt injection technique modifcations
to increase anesthesia options
8. Properly prepare and place eutectic
topical anesthetic preparations
9. Identify and overcome personal
barriers to putting skills into action with
confdence

Recent Dose Trends in
Dental Radiography
Catherine Warren, RDH
Cindy Saylors, MEd, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT)
This course is an overview of dental imaging
practices designed to aid dental health-care workers with the latest advances in
radiography and related increased x-ray
dose. The modalities to be considered are
digital, CBCT, and handheld portable dental
radiography units. With audience participation,
we will strive to compare common practices
to best practices. Most importantly we will
offer simple strategies to enable everyone to
improve their practice.
Learning objectives:
1. Defne and understand “dose creep”
2. Discuss ALARA/ALADA principle as it
pertains to flm/digital imaging, CBCT,
and the handheld portable x-ray unit
3. List best practices to minimize radiation
dose for the patient and staff
Go, it’s the best investment in
your future.
