Michael Welch is an Industry Marketing Manager Oil & Gas with Siemens Energy Oil & Gas – Industrial Power. Mike graduated
in 1986 from Loughborough University of Technology with an Honours Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. He
started his career as a Commissioning Engineer with ABB, before taking up a role at what was then Ruston Gas Turbines in
Lincoln, UK, as an Electrical Applications Engineer, working on both Cogeneration and Oil & Gas projects. He then moved
into Sales & Marketing of gas turbines in Cogeneration applications with Dale Power Systems, before returning to Lincoln
to take up a role in the Business Development team as Market Development Manager for Cogeneration and alternative fuel
applications, and presented several papers at international conferences on these subjects. Following the purchase of the
Lincoln facility by Siemens, Mike joined the Oil & Gas Business Development group working on strategy and market analysis,
and has recently been appointed to take on the role of Industry Marketing Manager, Oil & Gas, within the business unit
responsible for both gas and steam turbines. Mike is a Member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (MIET).

This presentation will discuss Alberta long-term future demand and generation capacity and forecast uncertainty.
John is an industry expert in electricity markets with over 15 years of experience in the areas of trading, business development
support, corporate planning, forecasting, analytics and regulatory oversight. John is currently the Director, Forecasting for
the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO). His core accountability is development of the 20 year long term transmission
plan for the province of Alberta as well as oversight of market analytics, regulatory fling support, 20 year load and generation
forecasts, macroeconomic outlook and long term market impact studies.
Advancement in OTSG Design Allowing Operation at 90% Steam Quality
Alex Berruti – Innovative Steam Technologies and Annie Sun – Suncor Energy
Operation of OTSG’s at a higher steam quality up to 90% offers signifcant operational advantages that result in improved
plant effciency and reduced operating costs. A novel approach to the OTSG design now allows for continuous operation at
90% steam quality using typical boiler feedwater quality. The OTSG improvement has been successfully applied to an existing
Alberta based 65 MW OTSG.
Alex Berruti is a Senior Development Engineer, Enhanced Oil Recovery for Innovative Steam Technologies (IST). While at IST
he has gained 20 years of extensive design and operations experience of OTSG’s. He has held positions of Project Engineer
and Design Engineer with focus on mechanical design, structural analysis, water quality, acoustic analysis, CFD and FEA. In
his current position, his responsibilities include the development and enhancement of OTSG’s for EOR/SAGD applications. He
holds a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree from the University of Waterloo and is a Licensed Professional Engineer.
Annie Sun is a Technology Development Lead, Oil Sands & In Situ Technology Development for Suncor Energy. She has 19
years of experience in the operation and design of refnery units, SAGD central processing facilities and well pads. In last
ten years, she has been focused on feasibility studies, design, operations and development of Suncor In Situ facilities. She
holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China and a Master of Science degree from University of
Calgary Chemical Engineering and is a Professional Engineer of APEGGA.
