Indianapolis is an outstanding community with a world-class fre department that has served city residents for more
than 158 years. An organization made up of men and women with diverse cultural backgrounds, our department
members work closely with city residents and businesses to make our city as safe as possible. No matter where
your interests lie within the fre service, IFD has skilled professionals ready to serve. Disciplines include frefghting,
emergency medical, hazardous materials, water rescue, extrication, rope rescue, urban search and rescue, and
confned space rescue, to name a few. As you attend the Hands-on Training evolutions and classroom sessions, please
take time to learn from us as we will defnitely learn from you.
IFD is organized to provide the resources necessary to meet the needs of the community at the highest level of
profciency and attainable quality. Responsive, quality public safety services provided by committed IFD personnel
build community equity and go a long way in determining the level of trust our citizens have in our organization. We
humbly and truly embrace the sentiment that at IFD it is our family serving your family.
The department is divided into seven strategically placed battalions and the following four functional bureaus:
Operations, Administration, Logistics, and Technical Services. Each of these bureaus is led by exceptionally talented
chief offcers whose ability to successfully reach their goals and produce positive outcomes is directly related to the
quality of the personnel they get to work with. The personnel working in each of these bureaus are made up of both
sworn and civilian employees who are dedicated to providing the best possible service to the citizens and visitors of
our community while remaining ever diligent in our efforts to attend to the needs of frefghters.
I am honored to be the chief of an outstanding, progressive fre department such as IFD. I believe the professional
manner in which the men and women of this department perform their duties is second to none, and I am proud to
serve with them. Please feel free to visit any of our 44 fre stations and enjoy the hospitality of your fellow brothers and
sisters. Indianapolis has a variety of attractions for you in both our downtown and surrounding areas. As you make
your way around the city, you will fnd that an abundance of restaurants, shopping and other cultural attractions await
you. Please make sure you stop by our newly expanded and renovated Local 416 Union Hall, and experience a piece
of our history by strolling through the museum.
Finally, as you attend these various events, keep in mind that other people can also serve as doorways to new ideas.
Hearing of someone else’s background and experiences can often make for fascinating discoveries that can educate
and profoundly affect us. So be open, and be ready to take advantage of this rare gathering of thousands of fre and
emergency service professionals from around the world to meet one another, talk with one another, and learn from one
Enjoy the journey, and I look forward to seeing you.
