Sarawak Energy is proud to be one of the supporting organisations for this signifcant event. We believe in
the sharing and learning between the players in the industry, not only in the economic sense, but also in the
social and environmental factors for a holistic and sustainable development. This conference provides a strategic
platform to meet the objective.
As a State-owned utility company with a proud history of more than 70 years, Sarawak Energy is taking bold
steps to support the transformation of Sarawak in its vision to become a developed State by the year 2020.
Through the State Government’s initiative known as Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Sarawak
Energy plays a critical role in the development of clean and renewable energy. The major objective of SCORE is
to harness Sarawak’s sustainable strategic advantage in the production of bulk electricity at globally competitive
prices to attract investments in energy intensive industries to the State.
This will result directly in the people of Sarawak enjoying higher income and improved standard of living. With this
initiative, the State’s GDP is expected to expand 5-fold by 2030, with approximately 1.6 million jobs to be created
when SCORE is fully operational.
As one of the key facilitators to SCORE, Sarawak Energy is embarking on a rapid capacity-expansion drive that
will result in a huge increase of its generation capacity. We are on track to grow the output of electricity by over
ten times from 5,000 GWh (in 2010) to over 50,000 GWh towards 2025.
Nearly all the energy under SCORE Phase 1 (total of 2836MW) has been committed to the energy intensive
industries, including 230 MW in export to West Kalimantan, Indonesia and also to supply for local use. We are
gearing to start our SCORE Phase II projects with a target of about 8000MW by the year 2020.
In implementing our mission, we are also giving important emphasis to the communities affected by our projects.
Our duty to the community compels us to meet the wishes of the affected communities that marries into the
international best practices seen in the IHA Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, UNDRIP and the
Equator Principles, to collaboratively develop a programme that now sees them enjoy free housing and education,
clean water, electricity supply as well as access to healthcare.
Our commitment to the people does not stop there. We are committed to grow leaps and bounds with them
through series of integrated socio-economic programmes in place to ensure the communities will taste the fruit
of development and have better opportunities similarly experienced by others in the urban centres.
As we inch closer toward the realisation of the SCORE objectives, it is inevitable that we will need to confront
challenges that test our resolve to develop sustainable energy. Continuous engagement with the community, as
well as working hand-in-glove with them, will be crucial to ensure that our projects are benefcial for both the
company and the community.
Sarawak Energy is excited by the opportunities presented by this conference and we hope that everybody will
gain the utmost beneft from POWER-GEN Asia Conference and Exhibition 2014.
SEDA Malaysia is pleased that the Renewable Energy World Asia Conference & Expo 2014 will be held in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia from 10-12th September 2014.
Renewable energy has been incorporated as part of the country’s energy mix since the 8th Malaysia Plan (2001-
2005). To reinforce the Government’s commitment to renewable energy, the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology
and Water developed the National Renewable Energy Policy and Action Plan (NREPAP) which was subsequently
approved by the Cabinet on the 2nd April 2010.
The Feed-in Tariff (Fi T) is the core policy instrument in the NREPAP that will drive the renewable energy deployment
in the country. SEDA Malaysia is a statutory body established on September 2011 under the Sustainable Energy
Development Authority Act 2011 [Act 726]. The key role of SEDA Malaysia is to administer and manage the
implementation of the FiT mechanism mandated under the Renewable Energy Act 2011 [Act 725 which was
enforced on the 1st December 2011.
This conference augurs well with one of the core functions of SEDA to promote awareness on renewable energy.
On this note, I wish this conference and expo a great success; may there be fruitful exchange of knowledge and
networking opportunities among delegates, speakers and exhibitors.
