SSL AS A BUILDING MATERIAL: THE REINVENTION OF LIGHTING DESIGN
As SSL technology rapidly evolves and matures so does our response to it. At the most sophisticated and successful level this involves re-envisaging light, not
just as a means of articulating space, but as an architectural building block in its own right. This talk will look at what happens when existing procurement
routes are challenged, construction methods and building materials picked apart, traditional industry boundaries broken down and building designer brought
closer to lighting manufacturer. The advent of SSL has created the opportunity to innovate through new partnerships, integrated thinking and applied
industrial design to push the boundaries of digital lighting technology and integrate SSL into building fabric as never before to create smarter, more responsive
environments for us all.
EOIN BILLINGS, PARTNER, BILLINGS JACKSON DESIGN
Eoin Billings is a founding partner of Billings Jackson Design, an industrial design frm with studios in London, New York and Chicago that has an
international reputation for lighting design and for its expertise in delivering solutions for the urban realm. Eoin trained in Industrial Design and won
the Graduate’s Gold Medal, awarded by the Society of Designers in Ireland, in 1991. He has been a member of the SIL advisory board since 2013.

Duncan Jackson founded Billings Jackson Design with Eoin Billings in London in 1992 to bring design and manufacture closer together in the
development of products and systems for the built environment. This ‘Applied Industrial Design’ runs from strategy through production to delivery,
enhancing the quality of products and providing manufacturers with a clear route to market. Duncan opened a New York offce in 2005 and is now
based in the third offce, in Chicago.

COLOR TUNING LUMINAIRES: HOW DO YOU COMPARE FEATURES AND PERFORMANCE?
Color tuning is the new frontier for health, education, and even hospitality. Photometering them is a challenge, and comparing performance, daunting. The DOE
CALiPER program is investigating these products and has identifed some quandaries and proposed some guidance for specifers and manufacturers.
NAOMI MILLER, SENIOR LIGHTING ENGINEER, PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY
Naomi Miller has landed at PNNL as a designer/scientist in the SSL program after ten years at NaomiMiller Lighting Design in Troy, New York.
Working to bridge the gap between technology and application, she is promoting the wise use of LEOs, and working with the industry to overcome
the hurdles and celebrate the opportunities. She has too many years of experience working in different facets of the lighting industry, but still
fnds lighting to be an intriguing melange of economics, human factors, and physics; an essential element of productivity and comfort; and a
visual delight. She is a Fellow ofthe IESNA and Fellow of the IALD.

IOT CONNECTED SMART LIGHTING SYSTEMS
This presentation will discuss the pillars of emergent Solid State Lighting (SSL) systems that take advantage of spectral control of light within the Io T
ecosystem. The main topics that will be covered in this presentation are:
• Standardized wireless communication technologies and trends in interoperable smart lighting: industry-leading companies are competing to create the best
strategies to connect and control light engines to the multiple solutions available for wired and wireless communications.
• Intelligent algorithms for dynamic spectral, CCT and color reproduction.
• Miniaturized digital sensors for tuneable lighting that promote human health for industrial and home environments. We will discuss these factors which aim
at foster innovative human centric lighting and cost-effective SSL solutions offering huge potential in combination with Internet of Things (Io T).
JOSEP CARRERAS, PRESIDENT AND CTO, LEDMOTIVE, IREC / LEDMOTIVE
Dr. Josep Carreras received his B.S., M.S. and PhD. (Cum Laude, with Honors) in Physics from the University of Barcelona. Over his career, he has
led and participated in numerous competitive and industrial research projects in the feld of Photonics and Lighting. Carreras has authored more
than 50 SCI-indexed articles and holds several patents. Since June 2009, he is the Lighting Group director of the Catalonia Institute for Energy
Research and more recently acts as President and CTO of a new start-up, Ledmotive Technologies S.L. that aims at commercializing LED engines
with integrated full spectral control.
