INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2016
This workshop contains two sections. First section is the overview and the update for the latest standards for LED and LED lighting from both industry and
the US government. In particular, the recent work being carried at ANSI, IESNA, NEMA, UL, IEEE, SEMI, ASABE, US EPA and etc. for LED applications. The
second section introduces the standardized methods of measurements for LED packages and LED lighting systems. It provides detailed explanations for the
objectives, procedures, and rationale for measuring, testing and projecting the long-term behaviors of the LEDs and LED lighting characteristics including
photometry, colorimetry, luminious fux and color maintenance, thermal resistance, failure rate, etc.
CAMERON MILLER, PHOTOMETRY PROJECT LEADER, NIST
Cameron is active in standards organization and professional societies, such as IES – Testing Procedure Committee (SSL Committee Chairman),
CIE (USA Div 2 voting), CIEUSA (Technical VP), ANSI/ISO TAG (Vice Chairman), ASTM, ISCC, NEMA, and CORM. He is also an NVLAP assessor for the
Energy Effcient Lighting Program and the Calibration Program.
JIANZHONG JIAO, INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT
Dr. Jianzhong Jiao is an internationally recognized expert for lighting products design, technology development, testing, standards and
regulations. He holds multiple leadership positions in the lighting industry. He is the past Chairman of SAE Lighting Committee, past Chairman
of the NGLIA, past Chairman of the NEMA SSL Section Technical Committee, and an active member of committees and working groups in SAE, IES,
ANSI, UL, IEEE, CIE-USA, JEDEC, ASABE, SEMI, and others. Dr. Jiao is an SAE Fellow, and has received several industry awards. He recently served
as the Director of Regulations and Emerging Technologies at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. Dr. Jiao has nine U.S. patents, written more than
40 technical papers, magazine articles, and given numerous public talks. He also teaches seminars and short courses for LED lighting for SAE,
SPIE, LFI, etc.

WORKSHOP 2: QUALITY OF LIGHT
The purpose of this workshop is to address and discuss the many issues facing the lighting industry around the broad topic of quality of light. This term
encompasses a wide variety of attributes associated with lighting including color quality, spectral content and timing, glare, collimated vs. diffuse light
sources, ficker, and others. One of the issues of particular interest at the moment is color quality. In August 2015 the Illumination Engineering Society
released a new method of measuring color rendering known as IES TM- 30-15. This method is intended to replace the longstanding metric of CRI. Instead
of having just one numerical index of color quality, as CRI does, TM- 30 has two: fdelity and gamut.
This workshop will begin with a presentation on the essence of TM- 30, followed by two panel discussions: one from the demand side of the lighting industry
(primarily lighting designers), and one from the light source supply side. These panels will discuss the implications of TM- 30 for their respective communities, including what “customers” are actually doing with it? In addition, other presentations and discussions will address additional aspects of light
quality, including glare and collimated vs. lambertian sources.
Participants in the workshop will be able to be involved in the most up-to-date thinking regarding all the important aspects of quality of light from some
of the leading experts in the LED and lighting industries.
ALEX BAKER, GLOBAL STANDARDS MANAGER, PHILIPS LUMILEDS LIGHTING COMPANY
Alex Baker joined Philips Lumileds as Global Standards Manager in 2012. In his previous fve years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
Alex managed the ENERGY STAR® lighting program, guiding specifcation development processes with manufacturer, electric utility and retail
stakeholders to make major revisions to the Program’s specifcations for general illumination products including solid-state lighting. While at
EPA, he also implemented third-party testing and certifcation of residential and commercial grade lighting products based on ISO/IEC standards.
A member of the TC34 technical advisory group of the U.S. National Committee to the IEC, Alex is also an active member of the Illuminating
Engineering Society’s (IES) Testing Procedures Committee, and is lighting certifed (LC) by the National Council on Qualifcations for the Lighting
Professions (NCQLP). He also has extensive experience in commercial lighting manufacturing and sales, as well as lighting for flm and television.
Alex received a Master of Science in Lighting degree from the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
AURELIEN DAVID, CHIEF SCIENTIST, SORAA
Aurelien David is Chief Scientist at Soraa. He has researched LED lighting for thirteen years. His felds of expertise include: semiconductor
physics; LED effciency; and color and vision science. His worked led to several demonstrations of ultra-high performance LED devices as well as
to advances in LED color science. He is the author of 35 international journal publications and 20 patents in this feld. He was a lead technical
contributor to IES TM- 30-15.
