STANDARDIZATION OF OFFSHORE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS
Giovani Cavalcanti Nunes, Petrobras
Aimed at reducing cost and schedule of its projects, Petrobras decided to promote the standardization of
its offshore production systems. Based on a radical change in design philosophy, standards units have
been designed and proved to be applicable to a wide range of crudes. This strategy has been successful.
Projects are reaching shorter schedules with higher local content. This success led to a contract of eight
similar units in Brazil, for use in pre-salt deepwater areas. By acquiring standard equipment and modules,
Petrobras has effectively promoted competitiveness, cost reduction and reduced schedules in its supply
chain. Other gains such as ease of maintenance, spare parts logistics and operator training are foreseen.
The EPC strategy and an update on the construction the eight units will be presented.
Giovani Cavalcanti Nunes holds a bachelor, a Masters and PhD in Chemical Engineering. He joined Petrobras in 1987.
He has worked in the design of offshore platforms as well as in the research of new technologies for the production of
oil. Since 2005 he is the corporate manager of Process Technologies for Petrobras Upstream.
